Exactly 9 of these have probably survived. Including non-runners. They were imported for less than 24 months in the late ‘80s. The styling is essence of angular. An F-14 could safely land in the distance between the front wheelarch and bumper tip. But still. I want one. Why? Any ideas?

R21 Turbo, import naow. Same gearbox as a Lotus Esprit V8 I believe.
Alternative option: Nevada 4x4

I thought the Esprit V8 gearbox was from the R25. Was it the same as the R21 turbo?
Also, I like the styling of AMC’s version better.

One of the unusual features of this platform was the use of two different engine layouts. The smaller engined euro models had the engine mounted transversely, while all engines larger than 2.oL were mounted longitudinally like on the R25 because its transmission could handle a lot more torque. The longitudinal models also had a slightly shorter wheelbase because of that.

Because. Weird 80s French goodness.
I’d prefer a Fuego however.
I’ve literally seen more R34 GTRs in person. (1 as supposed to 0). But damnit, I love it.

An American R21?
Nine is a lot over there. I haven’t seen one in years and they were quite common once.
They all seemed to be in this shade of blue.

The American headlights don’t do much for it, do they?

Basically, yes. We only got the 2.2L petrol 4 and FWD, and only from 1987-89. It had a front end and interior unique to the American market.
